There are certain stuffs that you should keep in mind before you are going to buy a new phone for yourself. Some of the general things that you should keep in minds are as follows
The Brand
The first and the foremost thing is the brand.There are several brands that you can find in the market.The leading brand labels being Apple, Samsung, Sony, Huawei, LG, Micromax, Karbonn, Lava and the list goes on...Each company has its ups and downs.For instance,
1.Apple has been always known for products only in the "premium" segments and they launch one only it.It has the greatest customer support than any other brand that you can find worldwide.
2. Samsung although was known for the number of units it sell, it has the downside of, as you all know the "Battery Bombs". Yet it is always known for its top notch camera performance
The list goes on...Its very important to a little bit of research before you would invest in a handset
The softwares and features
The features that would come with your phone and also the UI also depends upon the Brand and the manufacturer.For example Apple uses an OS named iOS in its phones and whereas other Brands mostly use the Open Source Android OS in their phones
A variety of features provided by the Manufacturer in this Age of blooming mobile World include various security features like a Biometric sensor(like Finger print readers or sensors) and so on
The Camera
Although a smartphone camera was not as perfect as a picture shot from a DSLR they are nowadays undergoing a tremendous transition.My choice or picks of smartphones that have the best cameras out there are Apple, Samsung, hTc

The biggest concern to the buyers switching from a feature phone(Brick phone :) ) is the battery life.Apple overcomes this problem by providing Optimised Software while others provide a huge battery to compensate the drain.It is best to dig in the phone's specs before considering it
Future Support
The only company that comes to my mind when saying this is Apple...It has truely wide support for its products and it is always well known for its timely updates. Other companies abandon their products except their Flagships after the launch.
