Set Ethernet (Wired) Connection As Metered In Windows 10

In Windows the Ethernet connection is set as unmetered as default. So, what happens is that you may find that your internet speed is reduced drastically, when you establish a wired connection(using Ethernet cables). This is because when you set up a wired connection, Windows recognizes it as unmetered connection
- So windows might download windows update and other Apps from the windows store(You won't probably download them as they are not as useful normally)

As windows continuously download loadz of stuffs you might find it irritating when you are doing something very important and essential

To solve this issue you have to set your wired connection as metered. This does not come as a setting so you have to make a small change in your registry. So, follow this procedure to get it done

How to do it?

(i) Run windows registry. This can be done easily by using the shortcut Win+ R to open RUN and then type regedit

(ii)Now navigate to this subfolders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\DefaultMediaCost

(iii) Now Right click on DefaultMediaCost and select Permission from the menu that appears

(iv)On the Window that appears select Advanced Button

(v) Click on the change text that appears next to TrustedInstaller

(vi) Type administrators in the Enter the object name to select text box and click on Check Names

(vii) Now click on the Ok button in that box

(viii) Now in that box check the replace owners on the subcontainers and objects

(ix) Click on Apply and then click OK

(x) On the permission for DefaultMediaCost dialog box check the Allow box in full control dialog section

(xi) Now click Ok

(xii) Now on the DefaultMediaCost you may find the entries for 3G, 4G, Ethernet etc.Now double click on the DWORD Ethernet and then change the value to 2
(The value 1 is for un-metered and the value 2 is for metered connection)

(xiii) Now close the Registry Editer and then restart your computer for the changes to take effect
